Yesterday, a few of the North Iowa Bloggers decided to spend the morning shopping local in Mason City, Iowa. Mason City is what I would say is the central “hub” of North Iowa. It’s the town the has all the big box stores, but when we went shopping, we wanted to make it a point to only shop local as there are so many stores with such great things! We were sure to find something for everyone in our families.
Here are the stores that we stopped at and are a must during the holiday season.
Our first stop of the morning was at Soyphisticated Candles. To tell you the truth, I have lived next to Mason City my whole life and I never knew about this place! Sophisticated Candles is located on East State Street, right next to East Park. They have everything from candles to soaps, to sprays and oils. All of these products are made in Mason City with natural and renewable soy and essential oils. What I love about soy candles is that they burn cleanly, with very little to no black, sooty buildup.
Yesterday, a few of the North Iowa Bloggers got together again to have some lunch at a fairly new restaurant to Clear Lake, the Ladybug Greenhouse Cafe, Bakery, Wellness Center & Spa. I’m always up for trying new restaurants, especially when they are in my hometown! 🙂

Last weekend sure was a busy one, I think every town had something going on. I know a few of the North Iowa Bloggers spent the weekend down in Franklin County for their Bloggers Harvest Tour. If you want to read about their weekend, you can find their posts at the links below.
While they were enjoying Franklin County, I was with my family in Clear Lake enjoying their Harvest Festival. This is an event that I look forward to every year. This year was extra special because it was their 10th Anniversary. To celebrate, they had special bags to put everything in. They also had a fun contest where a few people had specially painted wine glasses. You were to then take the glass to the chamber to get your prize. It was kind of like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to see if you had the golden ticket… or painted wine glass. 🙂 Sadly, no one is my family got one, but a lady that I work with said someone in her group of friends got one. So cool!
Clear Lake, Iowa is a place some people would call the grave site of a music legend. Other’s would call it a vacation town. I call this place home.
ZZ Top Concert at The Surf in Oct. 2011
Clear Lake is located in Central North Iowa and has a population of about 7,741. What the town is more recognized for is the Surf Ballroom and the crash site of the famous 1950s singers, Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. Beth Ann Chilies of It’s Just Life, recently visited the Surf Ballroom and had the chance to take a step back into time. Anyone who is wanting to tour the building is able to during their normal business hours.
To most people, Clear Lake is just a “tourist town” but to me it’s home. I have so many memories that I will never forget and It’s really sad to see some of the iconic hangout places disappear. I understand that town’s have to grow with the times, but there are some things that have earned their right and deserve to stick around for may years to come.
